World Day against Child Labour Observed On 12 June
World Day against Child Labour was observed across the world
on 12 June 2015. For the year 2014 the theme is NO to child labour – YES to
quality education!. The day is the United Nations observance to bring awareness
against child labour. World Day against Child Labour is an initiative of the
International Labour Organization (ILO). It was launched in 2002 to focus
attention on the global extent of child labour and to take action and efforts
needed to eliminate it. Since then every year on 12 June, observance of
this governments, workers organizations, employers, civil society as well as
millions of people from around the world come together to highlight the plight
of child labourers and what can be done to help them. According to recent
global estimates, around 12 crore children between the age of 5 and 14 are
involved in child labour. Main reasons of child labour are poverty, lack of
decent work for adults and social protection, and failure to ensure schooling
of children.
Three Indians Won Queen’s Young Leaders Award
Three Indians, including two women, have won an inaugural
award set up by Queen Elizabeth II to recognise exceptional youths who are
transforming the lives of others and making a difference in their communities
from across the Commonwealth nations. The British monarch will present the
awards to Ashwini Angadi, Akshay Jadhao and Devika Malik from India among 60
others at a gala ceremony in Buckingham Palace on 22 June 2015.
Chandigarh’s Iconic Rock Garden Creator Nek Chand Died
Nek Chand, creator of the iconic Rock Garden who has amazed
people for decades with his unique sculptures made from waste, died on 12 June
in Chandigarh. He was 90. Nek Chand Saini was known all over the world for his
unique creation in Chandigarh, the Rock Garden. This sculpture garden was
created from waste and other unused household materials. His creation Rock
Garden of Chandigarh was opened for public on 24 January 1976. The garden is
maintained by the Nek Chand Foundation, formed in 1996. He was awarded the
Padma Shri by Government of India in 1984.Born on 15 December 1924 in
Shakargarh region, now in Pakistan, Chand immigrated to India with his family
and settled in Chandigarh in 1950.
Dick Costolo Resigns as Twitter CEO
Dick Costolo resigned as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
of Twitter Inc after serving the company for five years. Costolo will demit the
office of CEO on 1 July 2015. Costolo joined the company in 2009 as its Chief
Operating Officer. In 2013, he helped the company to go public and recently he
struggled to attract new users to the service.
