The First census was conduct in 1872, than after since1881 regularly survey after every 10 year.

The Census 2011 is the 15th National census survey conducted by the Census Organization of India.

Census 2011 was held in two phases: The first phase :

Houselisting & Housing Census : (April to September 2010) and second phase : Population Enumeration (9th to 28 February 2011)

Mr. C. Chandramouli was the Commissioner & Registrar General of the Indian 2011 Census.
The census survey covered all the 28 states and 7 Union territories of the country including 640 districts, 497 cities, 5767 tehsils & over 6 lakh villages.

Population growth in 2001-2011 is 17.64% (males 17.19% and females 18.12%).

2001-2011 is the first decade (with the exception of 1911-1921) which has actually added lesser population compared to the previous decade.

Uttar Pradesh (199.5 million) is the most populous State in the country while Maharashtra is second with 112 million.

Lowest sex-ratio in UTs – Daman & Diu (618)

Highest Density in state – Delhi (11297)

Lowest Density in state – Arunachal Pardesh (17)

Uttar Pradesh (199.5 million) is the most Populous State in the country – population is more than Brazil.

Total expenditure and materials used: Cost Rs. 2200 Crore or Cost per person Rs. 18.33.

Literacy rate has gone up from 64.83 per cent in 2001 to 74.04 per cent in 2011 showing an increase of 9.21 percentage points.
